El incendio comenzó por causas aún desconocidas en la sala de máquinas del Marrajo, cuyos tripulantes consiguieron dominarlo por sus propios medios, aunque la nave tuvo que ser remolcada de regreso hasta el puerto de Algeciras.<br /><br />El Marrajo había partido de Algeciras a las ocho de la mañana, y poco después sus tripulantes descubrieron el fuego en la sala de máquinas, por lo que avisaron con urgencia al Centro Zonal de Salvamento de la Marina Mercante Tarifa-Tráfico. Inmediatamente fueron movilizados en su ayuda el buque de salvamento Hispánia y el remolcador Salvamar Algeciras, así como una embarcación de la Guardia Civil del Mar.<br />La tripulación consiguió controlar las llamas, hasta que el remolcador llegó a la altura del hidrofoil y lo trasladó de regreso a puerto, donde quedó atracado en el muelle sur. Los pasajeros y la tripulación desembarcaron sin ningún daño.<br />Francisco Javier de Tena, capitán del Marrajo, elogió tras llegar a Algeciras el comportamiento de los pasajeros en los momentos de mayor nerviosismo. "Se ha actuado con tranquilidad, dentro del nerviosismo surgido cuando saltó la alarma del barco al detectarse el fuego en la sala de máquinas, a la que no se podía entrar", dijo el capitán. "Por eso se decidió parar el barco y la ventilación, para posteriormente poner en marcha el dispositivo de anhídrido carbónico, que sofocó el incendio", añadió.<br />El Marrajo es una embarcación rápida construida en Italia en 1989. Se incorporó a la flota de Trasmediterránea en ese mismo ano para operar en la línea entre Algeciras y Ceuta.
